Annie Kaaka Makekau
1920 - 1986
Paternal Grandmother
Tutu Annie was born on February 22, 1920 at Lahaina Maui, Hawaii. She lived most of her life in Papaikou on the Big Islands Hamakua coast. I remember visiting her, a few houses before the Papaikou Sugar Mill. She was our Dads mother & Mathias Jugoz was our dads father. Annie passed away in September, of 1986 at the age of 66. Her memorial is at Pepeekeo cemetary, on the Big Island.



Samuel Naohulelua Makekau
1898 - 1963
Great Grandfather
Samuel was also born in Lahaina, on February 17, 1898. He was the tenth of eleven children born to Charles Kele Makekau, and Annie Loe Paniani. Samuel and Rose Pue had two daughters, their names were Mabel & Annie. On June 24, 1929 Samuel remarried Emma Yasue Naganuma, this marriage produced 10 more keiki. Tutu Kane Samuel was the Lahaina Fire Chief, and was well known through out the island of Maui. My dad would tell me stories of his visits with his grandfather. Tutu Kane Samuel passed away on April 6, 1963, his memorial is at Waiola cemetery on Maui.

Charles Kele Makekau
3rd Grandfather
Charles was born to Abel Kelii O Nuuanu O Kona Makekau & Mele Kahiwa in 1858. Charles married Annie Loe Paniani and had 11 children Milikaa, Kukaia, Matthew, Alice, Henry, Helen, Mary, Annie, Mabel, Samuel & Hank. Tutu Kane Charles passed away on February 12, 1929 @ Lahaina, Maui .

Abel Kelii O Nuuanu Makekau O Kona
4th Grandfather
Abel Kelii O Nuuanu Makekau was born to Naohulelua & Kumiaiakea of Kailua Kona on the Big Island October 6, 1819. Abel relocated to Lahaina, Maui where he married Kupuna Wahine Mele Kahiwa. The union was blessed with 14 children, Kalanikui, Haliaka, David, Maile, Charles, Kinakaaka, Naohulelua, Samuel, Raymond, Lele, Piehu, Mima, Poni, & Abraham. Tutu Kane lived until October 16, 1907 (88 years),
Kupuna Wahine until April 6, 1925 (101 years).

In 1897 the native Hawaiian population was less than 40,000. The first four signitures on this page of the petition are significant. Charles Kele Makekau, Abel Makekau, David Hauole Makekau & John Duncan, the husband of Lele Makekau. They signed on September 11, 1897. 21,000 signatures are included in the document.
